Thinking about becoming a swimming official?
Ever wondered what the people in white do at swimming meets?
Swimming officials help make competitions fair, safe and enjoyable for everyone. It’s a brilliant way to support Typhoon swimmers, get involved poolside and become part of the meet team. You don’t need previous officiating experience — you’ll be supported as you learn.
What would I need to do?

Learn online – Complete the self-paced Judge Level 1 theory course, approximately 6–8 hours. It includes timekeeping.

Learn poolside – Complete at least 15 hours of mentored practical experience at swimming meets, building your confidence alongside experienced officials.

Qualify – Work through your practical training record and have the required skills signed off by a licensed Referee.
What will it cost?
The online course costs £20. Typhoon is happy to reimburse the fee, so it doesn’t need to cost you anything.
Will I be on my own?
No! You can train at meets you’re already attending. Qualified officials will mentor you, answer questions and help you gain experience. You won’t be expected to know all the rules from day one.
Why Should Parents Give It a Try?
You do not need any previous experience.
